Show Me - Vehicle safety check questions

Question 1.
Show Me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.

Answer 1.
Demonstrate by applying parking brake (with foot on foot brake) that when it is fully applied it secures itself and is not at the end of the working travel.

Question 2.
Show Me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.

Answer 2.
Firstly turn the ignition one position forward and then operate the headlight switch to the on position. Walk around the vehicle checking that the correct lights are functioning.

Question 3.
Show Me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

Answer 3.
Press the Hazard Light button on the dashboard, then walk around the vehicle ensuring that all 4 directional indicators are flashing.

Question 4.
Show Me how you would check that the horn is working.

Answer 4.
Show where the horn buttons are and that you would press them to operate the horn. Only press if asked to do so.

Question 5.
Show Me/Explain how you would check that the power steering is working before starting a journey.

Answer 5.
Maintain gentle pressure on the steering wheel while the engine is started. Should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.

Question 6.
Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

Answer 6.
Operate the wiper control to wash and wipe the windscreen. (turn ignition on if necessary)

Question 7.
Show me how you wuold set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectivelyl, this should include both front and rear screens.

Answer 7.
Set all the relevent controls including; fan, temperature, air direction/source and heated rear screen to clear the windscreen and windows. Engine does not have to started for this demonstration.

Question 8.
Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you wuold use it/them.

Answer 8.
Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). turn fog light switch forwards twice to turn on both front and rear foglights. check that warning lights are on. Explain use of fog lights. (They are only to be used in fog or misty conditions that decrease visibility. Must be turned off when conditions clear)

Question 9.
Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.

Answer 9.
Operate the headlight switch to its second positon (dipped beam). with the engine or ignition on as necessary, pull the indicator stalk fully back till the main beam warning light comes on (blue light). You would know from inside the car that the main beam lights are on by the blue warning light on the dash is illuminated.

Question 1.
Tell Me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Answer 1.
No cuts or bulges. Minimum tread depth of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Question 2.
Tell Me how would you check that the brake lights are working on this car.

Answer 2.
Operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc. or ask someone to help.

Question 3.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and Tell Me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil

Answer 3.
Identify dipstick.oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the min/max marker. User manual.

Question 4.
Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and Tell Me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

Answer 4.
Open the bonnet and point to the washer reservoir. Explain that if it looks as if it is getting empty then fill it. User Manual.

Question 5.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and Tell Me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

Answer 5.
Open the bonnet and show the level of the header tank and describe how to top up to the correct level when cold. May be slight high if engine is still warm. User manual.

Question 6.
Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and Tell Me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Answer 6.
Open the bonnet and show the level against the high/low markings.

Question 7.
Tell Me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Answer 7.
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

Question 8.
Tell Me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressure should be checked.

Answer 8.
Open the drivers door and refer to the manufacturer's guide sticker. Check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold. Don't forget the spare and remember to refit valve caps when finished.

Question 9.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.

Answer 9.
Warning light should illuminate if there is a problem with the system. refer to owners manual and follow recommendations if this were to happen.

Question 10.
Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so that it provides the best protection in the even of a crash.

Answer 10.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. note - some restraints might not be adjustable.
